How a Hardscape Project Comes Together

  • Site visit: we walk the property, discuss how you want to use the space, and check grade, drainage, and access
  • Design and material selection: layout, elevations, and materials chosen to fit the home and the budget
  • Excavation: digging to the depth each feature needs, with grading set for drainage
  • Base construction: compacted gravel in lifts, geotextile, and bedding layers built for frost
  • Installation: pavers, stone, brick, or block set with tight joints and proper pitch
  • Finishing: edge restraints, polymeric sand, wall caps, lighting, and cleanup

Hardscape goes in before plantings.

Excavators, compactors, and pallets of stone crush anything planted in their path. Building the hardscape first and the softscape second protects new plants and lets the planting plan follow the final grades. Read more in our hardscape vs. softscape guide.
