Clean Lines Change Everything
The single biggest difference between a professionally maintained landscape and a DIY effort is the bed edge. A crisp, defined border between lawn and mulch bed transforms the entire appearance of the property. It contains the mulch, prevents grass from creeping into beds, and gives the eye a clean visual line to follow.
We cut fresh edges before every mulch application. For properties that want a permanent solution, we install aluminum, steel, or stone edging that holds its line season after season without the annual recut.
Mulch & Edging Options
The right mulch and edging combination depends on your landscape style, maintenance preferences, and budget. Here's what we work with most across Massachusetts properties.
Hardwood Mulch
The most popular residential mulch. Dark brown to black, decomposes slowly, and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Stays in place well on flat beds. Refresh once per year.
Most popularCedar Mulch
Natural insect-repellent properties and a pleasant aroma. Light golden color that weathers to silver-gray. Lasts longer than hardwood because cedar resists decomposition. Good near foundations.
Insect resistantHemlock Mulch
Rich reddish-brown color that holds well through the season. Finer texture than hardwood bark. Popular in New England for its appearance and availability. Acidifies soil slightly, which benefits acid-loving plants.
New England favoriteAluminum Edging
Nearly invisible once installed. Creates a clean, permanent separation between lawn and bed. Lasts 20+ years with zero maintenance. The professional standard for residential landscape edging.
Longest lastingStone Edging
Granite cobbles, bluestone, or fieldstone set along bed borders. Creates a visible design element that doubles as a mowing strip. Permanent and adds value to the landscape.
Design featureSteel Edging
Thicker and more rigid than aluminum. Holds curves and straight lines equally well. Cor-ten (weathering) steel develops a rustic patina. Commercial-grade durability for high-traffic borders.

More Than Just Spreading Mulch
Dumping mulch on top of weedy, unedged beds doesn't solve anything. It just hides the problem for a few weeks until the weeds push through. A proper mulch service starts with preparation: clean out beds, pull existing weeds and their roots, cut fresh edges along all lawn borders, remove any decomposed mulch that's raised the bed level too high, and then apply 2-3 inches of fresh material.
That sequence is the difference between mulch that looks good for a season and mulch that looks like an afterthought by June.
Our Mulch & Edging Process
- Bed cleanup — remove debris, dead plant material, and any trash or accumulated leaves from all planting beds
- Weed removal — pull existing weeds by the root, not just trimmed at the surface
- Edge cutting — recut all bed-to-lawn borders with a clean, defined line using a bed edger or spade
- Old mulch assessment — if existing decomposed mulch has raised the bed level above adjacent surfaces, remove excess before adding fresh
- Mulch application — spread 2-3 inches of fresh mulch evenly across all beds, maintaining the 3-3-3 rule around trees and shrubs
- Cleanup — blow all walkways, driveways, and lawn edges clean of stray mulch
Stop volcano mulching your trees.
Piling mulch against tree trunks ("volcano mulching") is one of the most common landscaping mistakes. It traps moisture against the bark, promotes rot, creates habitat for boring insects, and encourages the tree to grow girdling roots that eventually strangle the trunk. The 3-3-3 rule exists for a reason: 3 inches of clearance around the trunk, 3 feet outward, 3 inches deep. Donut shape, not volcano.

Mulch & Edging FAQs
How much does mulch installation cost?
Costs vary by volume, material type, property size, and whether bed prep and edging are included. We provide detailed estimates after seeing your property because every landscape is different.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for mulching?
Leave 3 inches of clear space around trunks and stems, extend mulch 3 feet outward from the base, and maintain a 3-inch depth throughout. Donut shape, not volcano. Piling mulch against bark causes rot, pests, and girdling roots.
Should you edge before or after mulching?
Always edge before mulching. Cutting clean edges first creates a defined boundary that contains the mulch and gives beds crisp, professional lines. Mulching first then edging throws mulch onto the lawn and loses the clean separation.
What type of landscape edging lasts longest?
Aluminum or steel edging lasts 20+ years with zero maintenance. Stone edging (granite cobbles, bluestone) is equally durable and adds a design element. Plastic edging warps within 2-3 seasons in Massachusetts freeze-thaw conditions.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Refresh once per year, typically in spring after cleanup and bed edging. A light fall top-up in high-visibility areas is optional. Periodically remove old decomposed mulch to prevent beds from rising too high over time.
When is the best time to mulch in Massachusetts?
Mid to late spring, after cleanup, edging, and weed removal are complete but before summer heat and weed pressure peak. Mulching too early traps cold soil and delays natural warming. A fall touch-up is optional for insulation.
